Longing for Summertime

March 2nd, 2011

The light yellow blouse with loose chiffon petal detailing is soft and precious for summer. It’s also light and airy for warm weather. The blouse gathers at the waist to add a feminine touch.

I don’t know what it is about the color yellow. It makes me smile. I don’t overload my wardrobe with this color but it’s almost like chocolate. I savor a garment in the color yellow and only wear it on certain occasions. I tend to save it for those special life changing moments.

However, this summer I have decided to change my color palent. I usually am drawn to color. All things color. This year I want to stick with desert colors as I call them. All shades of yellow, salmon, earthy browns, and touches of turquoise.

Curvy Like Sophia Loren

February 28th, 2011

Style Icon: Sophia Loren

Body Type: Curvy and Tall

Height: 5’10″

She was once the most famous Italian actress in the world. Sophia Loren, well-known for her voluptous curves, once said, “Everything you see, I owe to spagetti.”

Those curves have helped make her career. Sophia Loren embraced her figure and wore beautiful garments to enhance her vampy features.

I really like this dress on her. It brings out her hourglass shape. I think it is so important to work with what you have. Focus on your best features like Sophia Loren did. She’s not the thinniest and she’s still beautiful.

A woman’s dress should be like a barbed-wire fence: serving its purpose without obstructing the view.  -Sophia Loren

Spice up your swimwear by mixing up prints. It is fun trend to try. I love the watermelon bikini bottoms with the striped top.

Swimwear for Your Body Type

February 19th, 2011

It’s that time of year again. Time to start shopping for a swim suit. Some of us avoid the experience all together, some just plain dread it and others … I guess, they some how make it out of the dressing room alive!

It is a miracle that we make it through the store and then by the pool. But we do it!

Through the giant cloud of gloom, I have dissected different body types to guide you in your swimwear purchases. I have also provided various helpful tips.  So put a smile on that sad face. There is hope!

 If you are Busty

Look for tops that give support just like a bra does. Some women think they don’t need padding for the top. However, once they have worn a controlled top, they feel more secure in their appearance. Halter tops with thick straps are the best bikini tops to wear. Also, a wide band underneath the bust-line keeps things in place. A solid dark color worn on top diverts attention and minimizes.

No, Nos!

Be cautious when purchasing string bikinis! They do not give you the support you need up top. String bikini bottoms can be flattering but keep the strings below the waistline. No ruffles or big patterns on top! Also, bandeau swimsuits give little support for the busty area.

If you are Full & Curvy

Check the fabric content. Is it made with 18% or more of spandex? When you select controlled fabric, your curvy shape is supported from bottom to top. Hipsters are very flattering for the lower body and they hit right at the right place. Halter tops and bra-cuts give great support. Long-top tankinis control the entire upper portion.

A shirred one-piece can minimize a full figure. Look for asymmetrical shirring that draws the eye in other than horizontal shirring.

The pink suit above is a bandeau style with a supported top. Most bandeau suits do not control the bust area; however, they are available just hard to find.

Bandeauswimsuits.net/

No, Nos!

Don’t wear anything too baggy. Throw out the granny-style skirt suits. A bandeau suit that does not support the upper portion of the body.

Horizontal stripes maximize problem areas.

If you are Pear Shape

Find lighter tops and pair with darker bottoms. Purchase bikinis or one-pieces with wide-set straps to disguise a small upper frame. As shown above, V-bottoms also minimize hips.

Bandeau swimsuits are an excellent choice to wear especially if it’s a one-piece. Bandeau styles vary from two-piece to one-piece. They also offer some with thin straps.

To make your butt look it’s best, try wearing less coverage on the bottom. More fabric may work against you. By revealing more of your cheek, you flatter this area of concern.

No, Nos!

Stay away from super-high cut legs. No vertical stripes for the bottom half. You may think you are covering up when you wear boy shorts but you are not. You are bringing more attention to your butt and enlarging it. The boy shorts cut you body in half and does not allow your body to elongate. Showing a little more cheek is more appropriate.

If you are Tall & Slim

For upper portion, choose halter tops in lighter shades or with fun ruffles. To curve your waist, contrast the top piece with the bottom. Look for prints, ruffles and other cute details that add shape.

Boy Shorts work best for your narrow figure by giving more shape.

To create a waistline, wear any kind of two-piece. A Mono-kini also creates a waistline. It has the sides cut out of a one piece which allows the eye to draw in.

No, Nos!

Fortunately, there isn’t a whole lot you can’t wear. You mainly want to stay away from solid black one pieces. Have fun with your swimwear.

If you are Petite

Halter tops draw the eye up and enhance the bust. Shop for allover patterns and string bikinis. The side-cut out one-pieces are perfect for your figure. Love these!

No, Nos!

Throw-out the little girl swimsuits. Show off those womanly curves!

If you are Curvy Petite

When it comes to swimwear, pay for quality. Invest in one that fits well and is made to last. Halter tops elongate and flatter the curves. Swim tops that include bra support are a must. A sweet heart neckline really plays up your feminine figure. Shop for suits with 18% or more in spandex. The extra spandex gives more support.

Also, mono-kinis are excellent for bringing in the waistline. Having fabric vertically work down the mid-section brings the eye up and in.

No, Nos!

Don’t be ashamed of your curves. Marilyn Monroe had voluptuous curves and she is now known for being a sexy icon.

Careful when wearing a string bikini on top. Be sure the top of the suit is supportive.

How to Get the Perfect Fit

First ignore the size of the suit. It is important to concentrate on the how it looks on you. When shopping for a two piece, buy separates. I have never had much luck with a set. If the top fits, than the bottom is usually too big in most cases.

Think out side the Box

Do the unthinkable. Try on a suit you would never try on. You may be surprised. It may actually look great on you.

Shop Online

Consider Shopping Online as an Alternative. If you hate that strong lighting in the store dressing rooms and unhelpful salespeople, you may want to shop for swimwear from the privacy of your own home. Most online stores have great customer service, but always check their return policy before you buy swimsuits.

Treat Yourself & Get Inspired

February 14th, 2011

At the start of each year, I sit down with a stack of magazines and scissors and clip out anything that is visually appealing. I cut out anything that pretains to my current interests or lifestyle. Everytime I feel my style changing, I practice this. Every season, I try to pull from current clips to help guide my choice of attire.

Doing this important exercise has grown with me and I have grown with it. I have learned a lot about myself in the process. I recommend this to anyone having trouble expressing themselves. You may be in a rut with your wardrobe or your house my feel blah…your garden, your sketches, your cooking. Even your work or everyday life my be effected because you’re not nuturing yourself properly.

So get a glass of wine, maybe some chocolate and start clipping and pasting away. Write about the clippings and why you like them. How will you accomplish the look or will you? And so on and so on. There are no rules to this. I try not to limit myself with rules. I also keep a folder on the computer and in the filing cabinet of things I run across and will use later.

Below is my inspirations at the time. Feel free to send any of your inspirations. I would love to see them.

This photo is from Sea of Shoes Blog. She does a great job showing off her clothes

and styling them.

I’m not sure where this came from but it’s cool.

Magazine clipping… I love pictures taken in the desert. I can’t describe it. Maybe I’m missing summer a little too much.

This chandelier and colorful rug is from the Anthropologie Catalog. The photography is awesome! Here’s some more from Anthropologie…

Is it just me or are animals everywhere now days? Elephants, giraffs, monkeys, camels, and insects. The elephants are my favorite safari inspirations.

This combination of shorts and a sweat shirt is excellent for transitioning from winter to spring. Also from Anthropologie.

One thing you can take from my clippings is I’m ready for summer time. This is my favorite part of the year in Texas when the weather teases with a little warmth from the sun. Then it snags it right back with a cold front. Anyway, send your clippings my way. I’d love to see them.

Do You Want to Minimize or Maximize?

February 9th, 2011

Darks colors minimize and light colors maximize. If you want to draw attention and visually ‘expand’ a certain part of your body, wear white or another light color on that area. Generally, light colors create a focal point, while dark colors take the attention away.

Stick to light colors for areas that you want to enhance and be seen, or would like to widen! For Valentine’s Day, you  may want to consider wearing lighter colors to enhance a special area. Above, Kristen Bell is wearing white peg legs. Some how she is pulling this off.

If you want to draw attention away from your pear shaped bottom, don’t wear white pants or light colored skirts. Instead, pick dark washed jeans or dark pants to proportion this with the upper portion. Be very cautious when wearing white pants. This color can be tricky to wear. I highly recommend a good quality fabric that’s thick. Also, I always say, “When you are unsure about the fit, go see a tailor.” You won’t regret it.

If you’re super-self conscious of a part and don’t want to highlight it with light colors, but still need to visually expand it, stick to prints instead as they will expand but camouflage!

Just a fun fact in reference to light verses dark… You may be familiar with the painting above. Frida Kahlo used lighter colors to maximize and dark colors to minimize. The painting above called The Two Fridas is a perfect example of this. Notice Frida dressed in all white. She looks wider and even stronger in the picture.

Be My Valentine

February 7th, 2011

Special night planned for Valentine’s? It’s only a week away and a special occasion equals special attire.  Shop DressYourBodyType for the perfect outfit.

Unfortuntely, not everyone feels the love.  Some love to celebrate any occasion. They work hard to put together the perfect table sitting and then with much added detail, they plan a lovely and delightful meal for two. I am becoming more and more like this as I get older. I know I never thought it would come to this.

Anyway, for those who are not so domestic and would be whether continue hating Valentine’s day, I would like to suggest a few other things you can do.

Hang out with Close Friends

Gather together with friends for dinner and a movie. Or have them over for wine and chocolate. Catch up on much needed gossiping.

Babysit

Offer to babysit for your sister while she and her husband goes out. You won’t regret it. Besides, when it comes to childern bonding starts at an early age.

Break out those baking Supplies

Pick out a couple recipes like cupcakes or cookies. Make them for friends, co-workers, neighbors and family. Add some detail and attitude to each batch or custom design them according to the person. You will be feeling the love.

Write a letter

Send a letter to someone you haven’t talked to in a while. A handwritten letter takes time and the receiver knows this.

I hope this helps make your Valentine’s Day a little less of a dread.

Happy Valentine’s Day
